Energy Minister Stephen Timms has just announced a grant from DTI of £2 million to help fund a new biofuel pellet plant at Balcas timber processing facility, which will utilise sawdust and wood chips to make 50,000 tonnes of fuel pellets per year, providing energy for 10,000 Northern Ireland homes, A CHP plant is also being developed to enable Balcas to be self-sufficent in electricity and heat. The plant will generate 2.5MW of electricity and will also be partially funded by a £1 million loan from NIE SMART programme.
